ICC World T20 Cricket: Most Fifties by an Opening Batsman
by MairaS on January 13, 2011
in 20Twenty Cricket, Record Holders in Cricket, World Cup
The Matthew Hayden, the iron man of the Australian batting line up has marched to the apex of greatness, to the cricketing perpetuity, to an alcove where his name will be called out with great batsmen like Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulker or even Sir Garry Sobers and Sir Don Bradman.
Another coveted record which Mathew Hayden Holds is being the best Opening Batsman at the T20 world Cup to date who has made most number of fifties . Mathew Hayden has played only one T20 World Cup which is 2007 ICC World T20, and recorded four half centuries with a phenomenal strike rate of 144.8. During the discussed tournament he averaged out his score at 88.2 as he played around his front pad, his strong spot. Though his career in T20 was limited to 2007 ICC World T20, if he would have been there, there was a strong possibility that he might have clutched all the batting records of T20 cricket.
Openers are important in any format of Cricket. However, as T20 Cricket is really limited over Cricket, it is important that the openers provide a good start to the team. A fifty (half century) scored by an opener in T20 puts the team’s effort in the right direction.

ICC World T20: Most Centuries Scored by an Opener
A classy left handed batsman with stylish drives he is none other than Chris Gayle of West Indies. His marvel with bat in at the T20 World cups nominates him as the top class opener. Although in the presence of opening batsmen like Adam Gilchrist, Graeme Smith and Sanath Jayasuria, Chris Gayle has earned himself as the best performing opening batsman in T20 game of cricket.
Chris Gayle, playing against South Africa on their home ground, made 117 runs of just 57 balls in the very first match of 2007 ICC World T20. Not only that Gayle with the co- support of Devon Smith was able to build up a first wicket partnership of 166 runs and gave West Indies a solid start. However, with the departure of Devon Smith from the crease, Windies batting line thrashed out by Proteas bowling attack and South Africa won the match by 8 wickets.
Since then none of the batsmen has ever made a century in such a great fashion. Chris Gayle is still the undisputed opener with an excellent century in T20 World Cup history.

Scoring a century in a cricket match is always a batsman’s dream which he strives to fulfil in every other match whether it’s a test match a one day international or a T20 game of cricket. ICC World T20 has not seen much of it’s a knotty task to achieve a century in a 20 overs game by a batsman. Despite that we see some outstanding performances in T20 World Cup tournaments as there are only three centuries scored by Chris Gayle of West Indies (117 runs), Suresh Raina of India (101 runs) And Mahela Jayewardene of Srilanka (100 runs) in ICC World T20.
Chris Gayle, West Indies’ stylish left handed opener who in very first match of ICC World T20 scored the fastest century with flying colours. ICC World T20: Most Centuries by Middle Order Batsmen
by MairaS on January 7, 2011
in 20Twenty Cricket, World Cup
As there are only three centuries scored in ICC World T20 i.e. by Chris Gayle (West Indies), Suresh Raina (India) and Mahela Jayawardene (Srilanka), the only middle order batsman amongst the three who demonstrated his skill consummately is Suresh Raina of India. Suresh Raina made 101 runs of 60 balls against South Africa in 2010 ICC World T20 played at Gros Islet, West Indies. Playing on a Middle Order position in the discussed match, Suresh Raina was instrumental in facilitating strength to Indian batting with a swashbuckling flourish. Indian scorecard was glittered with his outstanding 100 runs where his 6 other mates overall contributed 80 runs to the Indian score of 186 runs against South Africa.
India which was in troubled waters due to the fall of 2 early wickets won the match by 14 runs, where Suresh Raina was awarded as Player of the Match.
It is of utmost importance in Cricket to understand the value of Middle batting order. Middle order batting in cricket and especially T20 is very important. In the fast and short format of T20 Cricket, middle order can get exposed to the opponents when the ball is almost fully new and the main pace attack is still their. Centuries by middle Order batsmen thus can change the result of any cricket match.
