  • The two teams played their first played a match against each other in the 1992 Cricket World Cup. The match was a high-scoring as Zimbabwe had piled up huge target of 313 runs, thanks to Andy Flower who made a superb century. The Sri Lankans replied well and completed the target in 49.2 overs with 3 wickets remaining.
  • In 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup’s Super six match, Sri Lankan opener Marvan Atapattu played a lustrous innings and carried the bat throughout the innings scoring 103* runs.
  • Sri Lanka bowlers like Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Chaminda Vaas, and Muttiah Muralitharan have bowled well against Zimbabwe and have been successful in picking key wickets for Sri Lankan cricket team.

Since the 1996 world cup victory of Srilanka, the team has been successful in making it to the final a couple of times. Their performance in world cups has been the best only second to Australia. Considering these facts, Zimbabwe needed to perform exceptionally well to bat Sri lanka. However, Zimbabwe cricket team has not performed at par in last few editions of the cricket world cup. As a result, Sri lanka did not find it difficult to beat Zimbabwe.
