Sanath Jayasuriya

Often regarded as one of the best all rounders in the ODI game, Sanath Jayasuriya is an explosive left handed batsman and an excellent left arm off spinner of Sri Lankan cricket team. His contribution, not only to the Sri Lankan cricket but to the world of cricket in general is worth applauding for he has been entertaining crowds world over with his brilliant sixes through the point and cover region.

Born in 1969, Sanath Jayasuriya debuted against Australian cricket team way back and has been one of the longest servants to the game. Since then he has been a part of 444 ODIs in which he has scored a staggering 13,428 at an average of 32.43 with a strike rate which is pretty close to a 100. Sanath has 28 centuries and 68 fifties to his name with his top score being 189 that he scored against India in an inning which is still regarded as one of the best by any batsman ever. His bowling statistics aren’t any less either, he has to his name 322 wickets which were racked at an average of 36.72 and a best bowling figures of 6/29.

Sanath still owns the record for the fastest fifty in the ODIs and the second fastest century. His record in the world cups is phenomenal with a major contribution that he had in the world cup winning squad of 1996. His last outing in 2007 at the world cup in West Indies saw him score 2 centuries and 2 fifties to make him a true great of the game. Sanath Jayasuriya is also second on the list as far as the highest number of runs scored are concerned.

With his career coming to an end, Sanath would very well be remembered as one Sri Lanka’s most favorite son’s who gave a new definition to the art of slogging and he truly is a legend that the world of cricket can never forget.
