All time great bowlers – Wasim Akram & Brett lee

Wasim-Akram

Comparison between two best bowlers- Akram and Lee

Wasim Akram has been the strength and guiding force of Pakistan’s much-feared bowling line-up ever since his international debut in January 1985 at the age of 18. At his best, Wasim Akram plays like most of us would wish to. He is a complete master of swing and seam. All this comes at high speed from a quick, ball-concealing action, and is backed up by the threat of a dangerous bouncer or deceptive slower delivery. Wasim Akram is rated by many as the best left-arm fast bowler of all time with every time starting off like a kicking horse and his career record certainly bears that out. He was the natural successor to Imran Khan as Pakistan’s leader and captain, and reached the 500-wicket landmark in ODIs in the World Cup. Along with the devastating pace and breathtaking accuracy, his ability to move the ball in the air and off the seam makes him the most lethal bowler of the Pakistan team. And who will forget his exploits during the England’s tour in 1992 and South African tour of 1993, when he along with his pace partner Waqar Younus, defeated the opposition batting line-up with élan.

Although bowling has been his top priority, Wasim has frustrated and destroyed bowling attacks with his occasionally sensational batting. However, some of his test innings has also been very effective. His 123 against Australia at Adelaide was played at a time when Pakistan was facing the prospect of a defeat.

56714328HB035_VB_Series_AusBrett Lee is determined that age and injury shall not weary him. Always positive and flashing a smile, he insists his body “still feels really young”. At first there was the pace, but then came the injury and long layoff. It is a recurring theme in Lee’s career as he has aimed for numbers that would result in license suspensions on any Australian road and always seemed on the verge of striking a body or a wicket. His speed thrills, but after overcoming another serious ankle problem in 2009, there is no guarantee he will be able to continue slamming his foot down. Despite planning a post-cricket career in Bollywood – he already has a hit song with ‘You’re The One For Me’ and is learning Hindi. The Allan Border Medal was another reward, along with the Test Player of the Year prize and the Pura Cup, which he helped seal with 97, his highest first-class score.

Whenever Lee released the throttle and began that smooth acceleration, the spectator swayed with the flow. The leaping, classical delivery has produced a devastating Yorker, a devilish slower ball or a young-Donald out-swinger. Add a fruity vocabulary, a trademark jump for joy, a stylish bat, a streak of sadism when bowling at tail-enders, a pop group (Six And Out), and an endearing link to a job at a gentleman’s outfitters, and you had the 21st century’s first designer cricketer – not to mention a priceless pin-up boy.

Lee’s career hasn’t always been easy. He struggled against accusations of throwing bean balls, stress fractures and other injuries but no doubt Brett Lee shares his world’s fastest bowling records with Shoaib Akhtar and that is why he is known to dread facing him.
