Cricket World Cup records: Sri Lanka vs Australian cricket teams

Sri Lanka vs Australia

  • The two teams have met 7 times in world cup matches. Australia has won 6 (including 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup Final); 2 by Sri Lanka involving one match which was forfeited by Australia and other the final of 1996 Wills World Cup Final.
  • Throughout the ICC World Cup’s history, Australia has dominated Sri Lanka except for one occasion when it lost the final to Sri Lanka in 1996.
  • 1996 Wills World Cup final, 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final and 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup final has been played between the two countries.
  • In 1996 Wills World Cup group match, Sri Lanka won a match by walkover when Australian cricket team refused to come to Sri Lanka for playing match.
  • One will never forget the role played by the legendary cricketer Arvinda de Silva when he helped Sri Lanka to win the final match against Australian cricket team in 1996 Cricket World Cup final.  He took 3 wickets, 2 catches and scored an unbeaten 107 runs.
  • From the Australian side, Wicket keeper batsman scored 149 runs from 104 balls in the all important 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup final while Australian captain Ricky Ponting scored a century in the same tournament against Sri Lanka.
  • Australian cricket team has not played any match against the Sri Lankan cricket team in the 1979, 1983, 1987 and 1999 world cup.

Although there have been many interesting encounters in the world cups between these two teams, the most important in my view would be the 1996 cricket world cup final, which was played in Qaddafi stadium Lahore. Srilanka cricket team grew well in stature post 1992 world cup. In 1996 they were a side everyone feared to face. From 1996 to 1999 it was usually difficult for all teams in the big league to beat Srilanka in all formats of the game. Although the team is still a threat to Australia and other cricket teams, the 1996 win marks the highlight of their performance.
