Famous/Popular cricketers: Zimbabwe: Charles Coventry

Charles Coventry the young right hand top order batsman from Zimbabwe is one of the best batsmen Zimbabwe has ever produced. He is a right handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper for Zimbabwe team. At the age of 27 he played his first world cup cricket. Charles Coventry has scored 821 runs so far with an average of 24.87 runs per innings. He has only played 37 matches so far.

The highlight of Charles Coventry’s career so far is the 194 runs innings he has played against Bangladesh in 2009. At the time of this innings, 194 runs by Saeed Anwar from Pakistan was the world record for highest score of an individual batsman in any ODI. Charles Coventry shared the record with Saeed Anwer for some time, and appeared first in the list of highest individual run scorer in ODIs as he was not out. His 194 innings was also the highest ODI innings on a losing cause after Mathew Hayden’s 181 in ODI.

He is an amazing player who can turn the game at any moment. His only problem is his inconsistency. His inconsistency is further fueled by the overall performance of the Zimbabwean team in the recent past. The team has been struggling in ODI and test cricket due to lack of talent. Zimbabwe has been part of world cups but the performance has always been below average. Coventry has been playing at domestic level as well but the performance has been fairly average. Now the important aspect is if he will be included in the squad for 2015 ICC Championship or would he wait for another four years for his form to improve. Zimbabwe in 2014 has been playing Bangladesh in test matches where some very competitive matches were played by both sides. However this competitiveness cannot be regarded rational as both teams are equally struggling in international cricket arena. Considering how the overall team is lagging on performance end, it will interesting to see their squad for 2015 cricket world cup.
