Indian Former Cricket Star Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly, former cricketer and captain of the Indian team, was born in Calcutta, on July 8, 1972. Whatever Indian cricket team today is, all credit goes to Sourav Ganguly. He is the man who is behind bringing Dhoni, Kohli, Sehwag and several other Indian players who are currently playing for the Indian national player. His captaincy has been one of the most inspiring things about Ganguly. The way he used his aggression in cricket along with support for new players is awe inspiring. He is ranked among the most victorious Indian captains of the contemporary times.  At present, Ganguly is considered to be the 5th cricketer to score the highest runs in ODIs. He was the third player in the world to exceed the target of 10,000 runs. According to Wisden’s  grading,  he was ranked the sixth best batsman in ODI. Ganguly was included in the Indian cricket team’s tour to England. He made 131 runs against England  and paved his position in the team. He showed outstanding performances in Test series against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia and won awards which included, ‘Man of the Series’, also.

In the year 2000, Ganguly replaced Sachin Tendulkar, as captain of the cricket team of India. In 2003,he succeeded in leading the Indian team to the final of the World Cup where Australia defeated them. As a result of showing  poor performance, he was removed from the Indian cricket team the next year. In 2004, Ganguly was honoured with Padma Shri award, one of the highest national awards of India. In 2006, he came back in the Indian cricket team, and showed remarkable performances in various matches. He was chosen to play for the World Cup in 2007. Ganguly made above 11,000 runs in ODIs, and is ranked among the winning Test captains of India. He won 21 test matches out of 49. Ganguly is now a commentator.
