World Cup Records: New Zealand vs Zimbabwe cricket team

Zimbabwe vs New Zealand

  • The two sides have played four matches against each other in world cups. Three matches have been won by New Zealand cricket team while one match was washed away due to rain.
  • As the records tell, New Zealand had total control in all of the matches played between the two countries.
  • In 1987 Reliance World Cup, Zimbabwean wicket-keeper batsman Dave Houghton played a superb knock of 142 runs in an effort to claim a victory as minnows of the game but was disappointed when wickets kept falling on the other end. Eventually Zimbabwe lost that match by just 3 runs.
  • An important super six match of 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup between New Zealand and Zimbabwe was washed away as it rained on the match day and reserve, both teams were awarded one point.
  • In 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, Kiwi batsman Nathan Astle scored a brilliant century in a super six match against Zimbabwe helping New Zealand to win the match by 4 wickets.
  • The two teams have not faced each other in world cups of 1975, 1979, 1983, 1996 and 2007.
  • Although New Zealand Cricket Team has never won the Cricket World Cup so far, they have played many semi finals in cricket world cups. Their experience of knock out stages in world cup gives them an overall edge over Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe in recent years has rarely challenged any other test playing nation to the level of becoming a serious threat. In usual matches, Zimbabwe cricket players show one or two good performances but as a team they are unable to deliver at the level expected of them. In Cricket world cups, New Zealand has always been a tough team to beat. While facing each other in the cricket world cup tournaments, New Zealand has been dominating the scene so far. Zimbabwe needs to improve its game to challenge other teams genuinely.
