Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has given Pakistan some outstanding cricketers; leg spinner Yasir Shah is one of them. Currently he is the leading spinner in the world of cricket. Pakistan has produced world class spinners right from Intikhab Alam to Saqlain Mushtaq, Abdul Qadir, Mushtaq Ahmed, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Aridi, Iqbal Qasim, Danish Kaneria and most recently Yasir Shah.

Born in 1986 in Swabi, Yasir Shah made his ODI debut in 2011 and test debut in 2014 and has already claimed the title of the “Shah of Spin”.  However fame did not come easy to him as Yasir who started playing domestic cricket in 2001 got the chance to represent Pakistan internationally after almost ten years in 2011 against Zimbabwe.  He has a rich experience of domestic cricket and was associated with many domestic teams; Yasir was also a member of the Pakistan A cricket team.

Yasir Shah was included in the 2015 World Cup squad to replace Saeed Ajmal who was suspended for his controversial bowling action.  Yasir was impressive from the very beginning as he bagged  a total of seven wickets in his debut match against Australia (three in first innings and four in second) to help Pakistan win the match by a massive 221 run difference.

Yasir’s immense talent and skills came to light during the 2015 tour of Sri Lanka. Yasir Shah took his career best 7 for 76 thus playing a pivotal role in Pakistan’s success in the first test match. In the second match too, Yasir shone through and took a total of eight wickets; although Pakistan lost the test but Yasir’s potential was the highlight of the match.  In the three test series Yasir Shah took a total of twenty four wickets and was declared Man of the Series.  With Yasir’s haul, Pakistan gained the No.9 place in the ICC ranking. Yasir Shah also became the first Pakistani to grab fifty wickets from just nine matches.  He is also the first leg spinner ever to take the highest number of wickets from first ten matches.

Yasir Shah idolizes Shane Warne the Australian spin legend and claims that he began to bowl leg breaks after he saw the Warne on TV. Warne too was impressed by his bowling and appreciated his performance.  Yasir Shah will prove to be an asset to the Pakistani team in future and hopefully will help the team to regain its lost glory.
